Deceased Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was laid to rest last Friday in Ramallah amid a huge and nearly uncontrollable crowd that surged into the Muqata compound past helpless Palestinian Authority guards. Many Mideast analysts said the wild scene was a likely forecast of the chaos that lies ahead in the Palestinian territories before scheduled elections in January. Already an assassination attempt by young Fatah militants has been launched against the new PLO leader, Mahmoud Abbas, whom they accuse of supposedly plotting with America and Israel to "poison" Arafat. Both Palestinians and Israelis woke up today to the news that Yasser Arafat had finally died overnight in a hospital near Paris. Following the long anticipated announcement, Israeli and Palestinian preparations have swung into high gear for his final burial near Jerusalem, expected either on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, which will follow a “state funeral” in Cairo tomorrow.

KNESSET APPROVES GAZA WITHDRAWAL |

The Israeli Parliament voted Tuesday night to give the Sharon government the authority to evacuate thousands of Israeli Jews from their homes in the Gaza Strip and four isolated communities in northern Samaria. However, the government's end may also be near after several senior cabinet ministers--including former Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu--joined a coalition religious party threat to quit the government if Sharon does not agree within two weeks to hold a national referendum on the contested withdrawal plan.
