One has to be extra careful when attempting to match current world events with ancient biblical prophecies about the end of this age and the return of Israel’s Messiah to earth. I’m more than old enough to recall the famous book “88 Reasons Why Jesus Will Return in 1988”---later renamed and reissued as “89 Reason Why...” when He did not show up that year! So in the current apparent run up to another major war in the exploding Middle East, we have to be careful not to go overboard with our predictions or expectations.
NEVERTHELESS IT DOES APPEAR that we are on the verge of a significant fulfillment of ancient biblical prophecy, especially the one recorded in Isaiah 17. I was one of the first authors to write about this in my first novel, THE END OF DAYS, published by Baker/Revell in 1996 (a later edition is still available on Amazon and other web sites). I included a chapter on this topic in my 2001 book (also Baker/Revell) ISRAEL IN CRISIS: WHAT LIES AHEAD? In that book, I noted many of us expected that the main thrust of Isaiah’s oracle--an apparent massive conflict between Syria and Israel, probably a nuclear one--was about to unfold in 1982, the year I began working at the Voice of Hope Christian radio station broadcasting from South Lebanon. War was then raging between American supported Israel and Soviet backed Syria in the skies over Lebanon and on the land as well.
HOWEVER WITH STRONG SUPPORT from the Reagan administration amidst a weakening Kremlin, the conflict never mushroomed to the point where the anticipated Syria-Israel final showdown took place, let alone the fulfillment of Ezekiel’s Gog and Magog prophecy, which many (but not myself, as explained in my CRISIS book) expected to unfold. Instead, a new actor appeared on the Lebanon stage---Iran, which had just gone through its “Islamic Revolution” three years before. Lebanese Shiite militia forces welcomed in their radical religious comrades with open arms, leading to the rapid establishment of the Hezbollah militia---today a major force in the region and the world.
OVER FOUR DECADES LATER, Iran is now deeply entrenched in neighboring Syria as well. This came about as a result of the ill advised Obama administration encouragement of the so-called “Arab Spring Revolution” that began sowing violent upheaval in the region in 2011--as I and others forecast it would do. Iran was by then a major player in the roiling Middle East, partly due to the ill advised Bush administration decision to oust Saddam Hussein in 2003---which I also predicted would lead to Iranian expansion in the region. Today, President Donald Trump is following the same dangerous path, opposed by his former Secretary of Defense, by prematurely pulling US forces out of Syria, leading the Middle East to resurgent Russian and Iranian domination.
WITH IRAN OPENLY MASSING FORCES in Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq while building up its alliances with Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the roiling Gaza Strip, the stage is clearly set for an all out conflict not seen since 1973. If Iran and Syria attack Israel with barrages of rockets and missiles, which both are now vowing to do, the war is on. Russia will clearly side with its radical allies, while the US will back Israel---but at what level we can only guess, given Trump’s absurd declaration that ISIS is defeated and so it is time to come home (eerily echoing Obama’s premature pullout from Iraq which resulted in the ISIS mini-state in northern Iraq and nearby Syria).
THE PROPHESIED TOTAL DESTRUCTION of Syria’s capital city, Damascus (Is 17: 1-3), and the major weakening of Israel (vs 4) now appears to be imminent. However, things can and do happen to delay the day of destruction. The timing of biblical fulfillment is obviously ultimately in God’s steady hands. Still, it appears that while America’s leaders squabble like children about a southern border barrier, and UK leaders bicker about BREXIT, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his Jew-hating Muslim comrades, Hezbollah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and Syria’s death dealing Bashar Assad, prepare to strike Israel with total destruction as their ultimate and oft-stated goal. Meanwhile Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump appear to be looking the other way. I will write more on the ominous implications of the building showdown in the coming days, the Good Lord and circumstances permitting.
DAVID DOLAN is an author and journalist who lived and worked in Israel for over three decades, beginning in 1980.
HOLY WAR FOR THE PROMISED LAND (Broadman & Holman), his latest book, is an overview of the history of the Israel and of the bitter Arab-Israeli conflict that rages there, plus some autobiographical details about the author’s experiences living in the land since 1980. It especially examines the important role that militant Islam plays in the conflict.
ISRAEL IN CRISIS: WHAT LIES AHEAD? (Baker/Revell), which examines the political and biblical prospects for a regional attack upon Israel, settlement in the disputed territories, and related topics, is also available for purchase, along with an updated edition of his popular end-time novel, THE END OF DAYS (21st Century Press).
